Woollies on, folks – winter’s blasting in

- By Jennifer Cosgrove

DRIVERS have been warned to take care as snow showers are expected in some parts of the country.

Counties in the west and north could see snow by the end of today, while the rest of country will endure a mostly dry and cold snap.

Tomorrow, temperatures will rise due to rain moving across the country, bringing showers and drizzle.

Heavy showers will remain for the north on Monday which will turn into lower temperatures and frost in the evening.

Tuesday is expected to be sunny and mostly dry with showers along the western and northern coasts.

The Road Safety Authority has warned drivers of the dangers of icy and snowy conditions. It warns drivers to watch out for ‘black ice’.

It is advised that if the road looks polished or glossy, it could be black ice. It has been warned that black ice is difficult to see and often looks like a harmless puddle.

Drivers have been advised that dipped headlights during the day ensure you are seen by other motorists in times of poor visibility. They have also been urged to remain vigilant and allow extra space for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Pedestrians and cyclists are advised to not underestimate the danger of ice while walking on footpaths, public spaces or entering and exiting your vehicle. According to the RSA, many slips and falls typically happen outside people’s front door, on the door step, on the path, or while getting out of a car.

The RSA has also reminded people that the best thing to do in extremely bad weather is to stay off the road.

The public is also advised to take heed of warnings not to go out and travel unless it is absolutely necessary, as this leaves the emergency services free to deal with other situations.
