FAMILY-friendly Lord Of The Ringsstyle high fantasy – but with owls. Young barn owl Soren (above, with younger sister Eglantine) sets out to save his own kind and defeat the evil Metal Beak. It’s based on the novel series by Kathryn Lasky, and the visuals are stunning.

FOOTBALL Everton v Swansea City, 7pm, Sky Premier League & Main Event

SAM Allardyce could be just the man for Everton in this scrap at the bottom of the table. He will hope Wayne Rooney’s goal-scoring continues as they have failed to win their past six meetings.

HISTORIC WAYS Private Lives Of The Monarchs, 9pm, Yesterday

HENRY VIII is the last subject of this interestin­g series. He was a big spender on such projects as the Field of the Cloth of Gold – a lavish, three-week summit of sorts, at which he wrestled the French King. The squeamish may wish to avoid the section on his bathroom traditions.

WILL Ferrell is in his element in this wonderful parody as a Seventies news anchor with ‘a voice that could make a wolverine purr’. Christina Applegate co-stars.

QUIRKY FUN Ghosted, 9.30pm, ITV2

FUN US buddy comedy built around the odd-couple pairing of Adam Scott (Parks And Recreation) and Craig Robinson (The Office US) as an ex-professor and an ex-cop who investigat­e X Files-style cases. Tonight, the duo go undercover when a girl goes missing on a spooky ride . . .

FAB BIOPIC Cilla, 10pm, ITV3

SHERIDAN Smith’s (pictured) excellent central performanc­e is the best reason to watch this three-part biopic, which tracks Cilla Black’s early career through Sixties Liverpool, and is showing in its entirety. Smith does her own singing, too – and her version of Cilla’s Anyone Who Had A Heart made it into the top 40. Continues daily.

CHILLER Annabelle: Creation, Pay-perview, Sky Store

THERE’S a tradition of horror tales at Christmas, and this US film – starring Miranda Otto (pictured) – is a prequel to 2014’s Annabelle, about a possessed doll at an orphanage. It’s a suitably creepy affair . . .

THRILLER SERIES Blindspot, 10pm, Sky Living

THE latest season of this US thriller has done a nice job of balancing the married life of Jane and Kurt with fast-paced, slightly barmy conspiracy plots. Tonight’s new episode brings the two threads even closer together with a threat from within the FBI.

ROYAL TALES Queen Victoria’s Empire, 10.50pm, PBS America

THIS channel, recently launched on Freeview HD, has a schedule full of documentar­ies. Tonight’s first of a four-part series explores the workings of the British Empire under the reign of Queen Victoria.
