Suspect in shooting of baby during Traveller dispute is granted bail despite garda objections

- By Brendan Grehan

A WOMAN who allegedly shot an eight-month-old baby, his mother and a teenage boy, in a Traveller feud has been granted bail, despite garda objections.

Charlene Donovan, 23, of Parslickstown Gardens, Mulhuddart, Co. Dublin, is charged with possession of a shotgun with intent to endanger life at Parslickstown Gardens on December 11, 2017.

She appeared before Blanchardstown District Court yesterday for a bail application.

The court heard that Ms Donovan is a member of a family who are involved in a dispute with the victims’ family.

Garda Michael Parry Jones said Lynn Doyle, an eight-month-old boy, and a 17-year-old male – who can not be named by order of the court – were injured in the shooting.

He said the infant had just been released from the National Children’s Hospital. He had suffered a fractured ankle and will require further treatment.

The 17-year-old had received injuries to his abdomen and both legs.

Garda Jones told Judge David McHugh that he arrested Ms Donovan at 3.20pm on December 13 at Blanchardstown Garda station.

He said Ms Donovan was later charged with possession of a shotgun with intent to endanger life.

Garda Jones said he was objecting to bail under Section 2 of the Bail Act, due to the nature and seriousness of the offence.

He told the court it will be alleged that three shotgun rounds were found at the scene, and a sawn-off shotgun was found in the garden of number 2 Parslickstown Gardens.

Ms Donovan’s counsel asked the Judge to grant bail. He said his client is 23, has intellectual disabilities and is illiterate. He said Ms Donovan would refrain from living in Dublin if she was granted bail. Judge McHugh remanded Ms Donovan in custody with consent to her own bail of €3,000. This was on condition that she signs on daily at a local garda station; resides at an address; surrenders her passport; observes a curfew from 10pm to 7am, and that she has no contact with the injured parties, and members of the Collins family.

The Judge set a remand date but ordered it not to be made public.
