2017’S WORST FASHION FRIGHTS And how it takes a lot of money to look this bad!
GEMMA COLLINS
WHEN fashionistas announced shoulder pads were back for 2017 I don’t think this is what they had in mind. The Only Way Is Essex reality star clearly decided the only way to stand out at the ITV summer party in July was to wear a dress that made her look like a quarterback for an American football team. Her Gerda Truubon creation spurred a barrage of social media jokes. Let’s hope it hasn’t left Gemma, 36, with a massive chip on her shoulder.
CHERYL TWEEDY
‘FASHION police? Help! I’ve put me skirt on over me fisherman’s wader boots and now it’s ripped and I can’t get it off.’ Cheryl, 34, has been keeping a low profile since giving birth to son Bear in March. But in September she emerged to take part in a fundraising day for her own charity Cheryl’s Trust, which helps disadvantaged youngsters. So, naturally, she turned up in a €3400 outfit, including a €820 skirt by Balenciaga, €1450 thigh-high boots by Off White and a €350 Gucci belt.
VICTORIA BECKHAM
SOME supermarkets have banned women from shopping in their pyjamas as it lowers the tone. But another set of rules applies when you’re Victoria Beckham. In October the 43-year-old fashionista was pictured in New York in this €1,700 red silk pair, which were two sizes too big and in serious need of ironing.
LAURA BAILEY
TAKE one old shower curtain, a couple of net curtains and stitch them together with some doilies. The result will be a dress like the one worn by model Laura Bailey, 45, to the Royal Academy Exhibition in June. It may look like a Blue Peter project, but it’s actually a €8,000 Valentino creation.
GILLIAN McKEITH
TV NUTRITIONIST Gillian McKeith, 58, wore this bizarre leotard and cobweb combo to a film premiere in October. Maybe it was the little-known sequel to The Silence Of The Lambs — The Mutton Dressed As Lamb.
SALMA HAYEK
MOVIE star Salma Hayek’s husband’s company owns such labels as Gucci, YSL and Alexander McQueen. Strange then that she should choose one of Gucci’s most garish get-ups to the Cannes Film Festival in May.
RIHANNA
THE Met Gala is the high point of the fashion calendar and each has a theme. You could be forgiven for thinking 2017’s edict was ‘trapped in a car wash’. In fact it was Comme Des Garcons in honour of the Japanese label which designed Rihanna’s eyecatching outfit.
RITA ORA
POP star Rita Ora was channeling detective Sherlock Holmes when she wore a bizarre Burberry shorts combo to the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards in October. The only mystery to solve is why anyone let her leave the house like this.
NICOLE KIDMAN
LOTS of pink, shiny bits and plenty of shapes and scribbles — if a five-yearold girl was asked to design her very own party dress, it would probably look something like this. Maybe Nicole Kidman’s daughter chose this garish, girly dress for her mother to wear at the Toronto International Film Festival.
CHLOE GREEN
TOPSHOP heiress Chloe Green, 26, wore a bejewelled bikini to a carnival in Barbados with her ex-con beau, Jeremy Meeks. What do they say about money not buying class?
CELINE DION
HER day job is to belt out ballads. But in her spare time Celine Dion turns into a swashbuckling vigilante. There can be no other explanation for this white Zorro-inspired outfit by Ralph and Russo, who also created Meghan Markle’s official engagement pictures dress.
HELEN MCRORY
PEAKY Blinders star Helen McCrory didn’t play a fashion blinder when she chose this scarlet dress to wear to the Evening Standard Theatre Awards last month. It may look as though Helen, 49, raided the BBC costume department for some Papal robes but the dress is actually by Serbian designer Roksanda.
