PROBLEM: Hooded

SOLUTION: Colour above the lid

-

RUTH SHAW, 58, a property developer and actress, is married to Philip, 55, a writer and director. They have three grown-up sons. SHE SAYS: I didn’t wear much make-up until I was 45, when a make-up artist friend took me to Harvey Nichols and introduced me to the Laura Mercier range. I loved it because I found it so easy to apply and it is great quality. I wear a little make-up all the time, but try to keep it light — brown eyeshadow, black mascara and brown liner.

However, now I’m in my late 50s my brow has started to sink downwards and it’s harder to wear eyeshadow. You simply can’t see it because of the hooded lid! I do facial yoga — which I’m sure has helped to stop my face sagging too much — and I don’t smoke or go in the sun, but I do want to know how to make my eyes stand out more. OONAGH SAYS: The secret to bringing colour to hooded eyes is to use it around the whole eye area, rather than just on the lid. I applied the Lord & Berry Reglam Crayon Eyeshadow in Exclusive (€10.40, lookfantastic.com) over the lid, giving it a gold sheen, and then blended brown and purple shades (NYX Professional Make-up Lid Lingerie Shadow Palette, €9.99, littlewoodsireland.ie) into the crease of the lid and below the bottom eyelashes. Smudging lighter shades up to the brow also helped to lift the whole eye area. I used the M&S Chisel Eye Liner (€22, marksandspencer.ie) on the top and bottom lash lines to make the eyes really pop.
