Storms ease... but cold snap is on the way!
WE’RE finally seeing the back of vicious winds and heavy rainfall that gripped the country – but it’s not all good news as temperatures are set to drop over the weekend.
This next few days will see the return of sub-zero conditions, with temperatures expected to plummet to as low as -5C.
Cold weather will return tonight with the mercury expected to hit a low of -3C, while the rest of the weekend will see conditions deteriorate even further, as widespread severe frost and ice is due on Saturday and Sunday night.
Freezing fog is also a possibility on Sunday night, while wintry showers could lead to sleet and snow on high grounds throughout the weekend.
Met Éireann is warning that dangerous road conditions are likely during this cold period.
The approaching freezing temperatures will be a major contrast from recent conditions. Most parts of the country were battered by stormy weather this week as they felt the full force of Storm Eleanor.
Strong winds and rain lead to fallen trees and flooding in some parts. Galway City received the worst of the storm, as floods caused havoc for residents and business owners.
Homes and businesses in the docks area saw the most damage, with many submerged in water. A number of Irish Ferries services to and from the UK were cancelled yesterday due to adverse weather.
Meanwhile, Aer Lingus cancelled a number of flights yesterday as severe weather hit areas of the US.
