MAGIC OF THE CUP: WHO WILL SLAY THE GIANTS?

-

WITH 14 Premier League sides in action against lower-league teams across the FA Cup third round, Sportsmail’s CHRIS SUTTON assesses where the shocks are likely to occur: FLEETWOOD v LEICESTER It will be great if Jamie Vardy is able to play some part against his former club. Even if Leicester are without Vardy, it would be a tall order for Fleetwood to progress and their Cup run is likely to end this afternoon. Chance of a shock: 2/5 BOLTON v HUDDERSFIELD David Wagner enjoyed a good run in the FA Cup last season, taking Manchester City to a fifthround replay, but will he want to rest players? Bolton have won three of their last four games and Phil Parkinson will be keen to keep that momentum going. Chance of a shock: 3/5 BOURNEMOUTH v WIGAN I am a fan of Eddie Howe, but his decision to make 11 changes in last season’s third round backfired spectacularly. A 3-0 defeat by Millwall sparked a run of seven games without a win. Bournemouth are in a relegation battle and I can see Howe prioritising the Premier League again. If Wigan, who are top of League One, also rest players then that would completely devalue the Cup. Chance of a shock: 2/5 COVENTRY v STOKE I am surprised Mark Hughes is still in charge at Stoke after a nightmare week. Hughes must be scratching his head as to what is his strongest team. Mark Robins has guided Coventry to third in League Two and if he gets one over his former Manchester United team-mate, Stoke fans would lose patience. Chance of a shock: 3/5 EXETER v WEST BROM I played in Cup games like this. They can be an absolute nightmare — especially if you’re not on top of your game. West Brom are without a win in 21 games in all competitions. Another loss would be a disaster. I would expect Pardew, who has reached the final with West Ham and Crystal Palace, to field a strong side. Chance of a shock: 3/5 FULHAM v S’HAMPTON With Southampton in freefall in the league, Mauricio Pellegrino will be tempted to field a weakened team — but can he afford to? This is a good chance

for Southampton to gain a much-needed confidence boost. It will not be easy against a Fulham side who are full of confidence following their 4-1 win over Ipswich in midweek. Ryan Sessegnon (below) scored twice in that victory and the exciting 17-year-old will want to do that again against top-flight opposition. If Saints lose, Pellegrino may be on borrowed time. Chance of a shock: 4/5 NEWCASTLE v LUTON Rafa Benitez knows how to deliver success in cups but he will surely be prioritising the league this season. Luton have scored a staggering 77 times in all competitions and the League Two side will be confident of an upset. Chance of a shock: 3/5 WATFORD v BRISTOL C What better way for Bristol City to warm up for their League Cup semi The final against Manchester City than by beating Watford? Hornets are on a dire run of one win in nine ... and do not forget that Bristol City have already won at Vicarage Road in the League Cup this season! Chance of a shock: 5/5 WOLVES v SWANSEA It would be a shock if Swansea win. With Wolves 12 points clear at the top of the Championship, their fans will hope Nuno Espirito Santo takes the FA Cup seriously. Chance of a shock: 5/5 NORWICH v CHELSEA Norwich have not won against Chelsea since December 1994 and even if Antonio Conte rings the changes I cannot see Norwich springing a surprise. Chance of a shock: 1/5 SHREWSBURY v W HAM David Moyes was stung at Shrewsbury while in charge at Everton in 2003 but I cannot see that deterring him from fielding a weakened side. Staying in the Premier League is of the utmost importance so a repeat of Shrewsbury’s heroics of 15 years ago is not out of the question. Chance of a shock: 4/5 TOTTENHAM v WIMBLEDON This may be Tottenham’s third game in six days but they will be too strong for AFC Wimbledon no matter what team they field. Victory for ‘Wimbledon’ on their Wembley return would be a greater upset than their final win over Liverpool in 1988. Chance of a shock: 1/5 NOTTINGHAM FOREST v ARSENAL Arsene Wenger has never been knocked out in the third round and I cannot see Forest catching him cold tomorrow, even if Wenger will likely field his ‘B’ team. Chance of a shock: 1/5
