SPELL BINDER The Worst Witch, 5pm, CBBC CBBC’s brilliant series based on Jill Murphy’s books makes a truly barnstorming return! There’s an all-action opening and a whole new intake of budding witches to meet, including Ethel’s meek little sister, Sybil. Mildred (Bella Ramsey, pictured), meanwhile, has created her own spell. SITCOM ORIGIN Will & Grace, 5pm, 5Star IF the revival of Will & Grace (Fridays, 10pm, Channel 5) makes you curious to see how the US sitcom began, here are the first two episodes – from 1998. It’s almost eerie how unchanged the show is, at least in terms of style, especially as Will, Grace, Jack and Karen are almost two decades younger here. FA CUP SOCCER Brighton & Hove Albion v Crystal Palace, 7pm, BT Sport 2 AFTER the FA Cup fourth-round draw is shown live from 7pm on BBC2, these two bitter rivals battle it out in the final game of the third round (kick-off 7.45pm). FANTASY FILM Life Of Pi, 8pm, E4 BASED on the seemingly unfilmable novel by Yann Martel, this fantastical drama is a visual feast. The story of a shipwreck with only a handful of survivors – a boy, a tiger, a zebra and an orang-utan – marooned on a boat, it’s a sweeping allegory that is as moving as it is befuddling . . . SCI-FI CRACKER Star Trek: Discovery, Episode 10, Netflix LAST year’s first batch of episodes from this impressive new series left the crew of the Discovery, led by ruthless tactician Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs), in a surprising position – albeit one that may feel familiar to fans of Star Trek: Voyager. Rejoin their adventures in the great beyond this week. PROFILE Gabriel Byrne On George Bernard Shaw, 9pm, BBC4 THE softly spoken actor presents this new profile of the larger-than-life writer, whom he believes to be ‘the forgotten man of Irish literature’, at least to the Irish. This may make sense when you consider that Shaw spent three quarters of his life in England, which is where Byrne begins his film. ON-DEMAND MOVIE Detroit, Sky Store VISCERAL, based-on-truth drama from Kathryn Bigelow – and starring Anthony Mackie – that puts you directly inside the racial tension and rioting of Sixties Detroit. Star Wars’ John Boyega plays a guard caught between the warring sides. WHODUNNIT Murdoch Mysteries, 9pm, Alibi MURDOCH (Yannick Bisson) is in a desperate place at the start of this new run – if he doesn’t confess to a murder he didn’t commit, villains will kill his wife Dr Julia Ogden (Helene Joy, pictured below with Bisson). Tamzin Outhwaite guest stars as a visiting police chief in what is, by Murdoch standards, a roller-coaster ride of an episode – is she to be trusted? 999 EMERGENCY Into The Fire, 10pm, Really THIS new series uses heatproof helmet cams to put us right inside the terrifying fires attended by Britain’s West Midlands Fire Service. It’s raw in other ways, too. ‘Imagine if you didn’t have house insurance,’ says one of the firefighters to a man whose home has just been wrecked in a blaze. It turns out he didn’t.
