A 45-YEAR-old man has been charged with the murder of Dundalk woman Irene White in 2005.

Niall Power appeared at Dundalk District Court yesterday charged with the offence.

It is alleged that he murdered Ms White on April 6, 2005, at her home, the Ice House on Demesne Road, Dundalk.

Garda Sergeant Mick Sheridan gave evidence of arresting Power at 10.40pm on Wednesday.

He said that at 11.07pm, he charged him, cautioned him and gave him a copy of the charge sheet. He said Mr Power made no reply to the charge.

He asked Judge John Coughlan to remand the accused in custody to Cloverhill District Court in Dublin next Thursday, February 8, at 10am.

Defence solicitor Barry Callan applied for legal aid and said his client was a married man and a father of four who takes home €420 a week.

Judge Coughlan granted legal aid and remanded Mr Power in custody to appear in court via video-link next week.

Mr Power, with an address at Gyles Quay, Riverstown, Dundalk, Co. Louth, wore a black coat and listened silently to the proceedings.

Earlier this week, another man, Anthony Lambe was sentenced to life in prison at the Central Criminal Court on Monday after pleading guilty to the murder of Ms White, a mother of three. Lambe, from Annadrumman, Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, was sentenced by Justice Patrick McCarthy to life imprisonment.

Ms White had three children, aged 17, six and four at the time. Her body was discovered by her 79-year-old mother when she visited Ms White’s home.

In a victim impact statement this week, Ms White’s daughter, eldest daughter, Jennifer McBride, described her mother as a caring and generous person who would put the worries of others ahead of her own.

Her mother was ‘very much a spiritual person’, she added, and her interests included counselling and reflexology, but her children were always first.
