Daniel’s ‘dreary’ den gets revamp

- By Andrea Kissane

THE show is called Room To Improve – and Daniel and Majella O’Donnell certainly had that when RTÉ’s Dermot Bannon came calling.

The layout of the celebrity couple’s Co. Donegal house was criticised by the TV architect, who described it as ‘dark and dreary’. Bannon, aided by quantity surveyor Lisa O’Brien, was charged with giving their large, four-bedroom home in Kincasslagh a makeover in a celebrity special, but the couple didn’t agree with his ‘bigbudget’ plans. He said: ‘It’s a big, fine house but it turned its back on everything around it and the amazing landscape. I thought the decor was quite ordinary and the house was a little bit dark and dreary.’

In an interview with the RTÉ Guide, Bannon admitted he didn’t hold back when it came to the wrecking ball.

‘In order to do something significant to the house, we needed to do quite a bit of demolishing,’ he confessed. ‘They are getting 60% of a new house – that costs money and I don’t know if Daniel wanted to spend that much money.’

The property expert revealed his plans included an openplan kitchen and living area, overlooked by a mezzanine library. But crooner Daniel was reluctant to throw anything out, explained Bannon.

Room To Improve with Daniel O’Donnell airs this Sunday at 9.30pm on RTÉ One.
