Why eating green bananas could be good for your gut
GREEN bananas may offer a novel treatment for diarrhoea.
When researchers at Victoria University in Australia reviewed studies of the fruit, they found ‘green bananas appear to deliver an array of therapeutic benefits’, the journal Prilozi reported. Compounds in unripe bananas, called flavonoids and saponins, are thought to slow material moving through the bowel and reduce inflammation.
Around 135 children with persistent diarrhoea are now taking part in a study into the effects of bananas by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Bangladesh.
