Comer lays down a marker against Mayo

- By PHILIP LANIGAN

GALWAY shooting star Damien Comer admitted his team are confounding expectations by sitting joint top of Division 1 with Dublin in the Allianz Football League rather than being relegation fodder. The same player put in a huge shift as Galway trumped Mayo at Salthill on Sunday in a fiercelycontested derby which produced 18 cards in total, including three sendings off. ‘It was a tough old battle with our neighbours. Galway and Mayo is always going to have its own bit of spark. It was evident there in the second half. It’s a bit of handbags stuff. It’s the fact that everyone had an eye on May 13. They were all looking forward to that and no one wanted to give a backwards step and that led to the bit of argy-bargy. We are delighted with our win. We have three from three from three now but it’s on to the next one. We need to keep our feet firmly on the ground.’ The late flashpoints made for ugly viewing but the fact that Galway had the match in the bag at that stage means they won’t be overly concerned. A running theme of this victory and the previous ones over Tyrone and Donegal has been the Tribe’s ability to keep clean sheets. ‘Coming up from Division 2, not many would have expected us to be getting one win never mind three in a row. A lot would have expected us maybe to go down. But we are showing that bit of consistency. We are looking, every day we go out, to put in a performance. Hopefully we can continue it on.’

TYRONE wing-back Tiernan McCann is to undergo a scan inside the next 24 hours to determine the nature of the injury that forced him out of Sunday’s Division 1 win over Kildare. All-Star nominee McCann limped out of the game as Tyrone edged to a onepoint win over the Lilywhites, leaving Red Hands boss Mickey Harte concerned about the defender’s fitness. He will not feature in this Saturday night’s McKenna Cup final against Donegal at Celtic Park. ‘It is a bit worrying for us. He hurt his knee in the last few minutes and he had to come off. We are hoping that it is a bang and a bruise more than anything else,’ said Harte.
