McKaigue: Time for a black card in hurling

- By MARK GALLAGHER

SLAUGHTNEIL’S Karl McKaigue believes it is time that the GAA made hurling follow Gaelic football’s lead and bring a black card into the game to eradicate cynicism. Brendan Rogers was twice dragged down cynically by Na Piarsaigh players as Slaughtneil lost their All-Ireland semi-final at the weekend and McKaigue believes that Croke Park have to deal with the issues within hurling. ‘It is probably time for a black card in hurling, yeah,’ McKaigue said. ‘Brendan was pulled down twice. We got a penalty in the first half but it was no guarantee that it would be scored. But the pull-down in the second half was as blatant as you would see. ‘If it had been a football game, they would have been screaming and shouting for a black card. And you do feel a little hard done by because if Brendan had got by his man in the second half, he was going to bury the ball into the net. ‘Cynicism is always going to be in games like that, and it is probably creeping into hurling a lot more now than it has done before. So possibly bringing in a black card is something for the hierarchy to look at.’ Slaughtneil must put their disappointment of failing to beat the 13-man Limerick champions behind them as they focus on their All-Ireland club football semifinal against Nemo Rangers on Saturday week.
