The beasts in Dublin Zoo prepare for a new arrival
THERE are plenty of beasts in Dublin Zoo – but preparations are in place for a new arrival from the east.
The facility has implemented its cold weather contingency plan that will operate for the duration of the weather alert.
All of the animals will have access to their heated houses at all times, and the zoo has brought in extra heaters to keep warmer-climate animals such as giraffes and zebras safe.
Staff currently don’t know whether the zoo will remain open during the storm. During Storm Ophelia last year, Dublin Zoo was forced to close for a day.
Animals that thrive in the cold, such as the wolves and snow leopards, will likely make the most of the colder temperatures – but they will be able to go inside if they need to.
Dublin Zoo recently welcomed an elephant calf, a rhino calf, and two Rothschild giraffes. The youngsters are particularly vulnerable to the sudden drop in temperature, so an animal care team will keep an extra close eye on the babies.
In case deliveries can’t get through, Dublin Zoo also ordered extra food for all the animals. Extra salt was also delivered to keep pathways clear of ice and safe for both staff and visitors, should the zoo remain open.
‘The wellbeing of animals in our care is the number-one priority,’ read a statement from the zoo.
