CPR should commence when it is observed that the patient is unresponsive and not breathing. The following steps should then be taken:

1. Ensure that the scene is safe.

2. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment if available.

3. Check patient’s responsiveness: tap the person’s shoulders gently and ask, ‘Are you OK?’
