When to start CPR When every second counts, how to take action

-

OPEN the airway by tilting back the head (1a). This will lift the tongue from the back of the victim’s throat. To open the airway lift the chin with two fingers of one hand while placing the other hand on the patient’s forehead (1b).

2 WHEN the airway is open check for breathing. by looking for normal rise and fall of the chest. Remember that many cardiac arrest victims will have agonal (gasping) breathing. If no breathing or if agonal breathing, start CPR.

3 CALL for someone to help by ringing 112 or 999 and get the automated external defibrillator (AED) if there is one available. If you are alone, call 112 or 999 yourself and get the AED if there is one nearby. If you are calling the emergency services yourself, then put your phone on loudspeaker.

Remember that the calltaker will assist you with the each of the steps of CPR.

PLACE the heel of one hand over the breastbone midway between the nipples.

PLACE your other hand over the first hand. The fingers of the hand on top should be braced between the fingers of the lower hand.

ENSURE that your body is directly over your hands.

GIVE 30 chest compressions, pressing down to a depth of at least 5cm. Compressions must be hard and fast: aim for a rate of between 100 and 120 compressions per minute. Count the 30 compressions and count aloud so that you do not lose your count.
