FAINTING
FAINTING is a sudden and temporary loss of consciousness caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Fainting may also occur as a reaction to pain, fear, exhaustion, emotional stress and food deprivation.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Slow Pulse; Dizziness; Pale, cold, clammy skin; Blurred vision; Weakness of limbs; Sweating
TREATMENT
1. Ensure patient is lying down with legs raised.
2. Offer support and reassurance as the patient may become stressed or embarrassed.
3. Ensure, therefore, that bystanders are encouraged to move away from the scene.
4. Prevent chilling.
5. Ask the patient to sit up slowly again with assistance and reassure the patient.
6. Ensure a flow of fresh air (ie. open a window or door.
7. Check for underlying medical conditions.
8. Advise patient to attend a medical practitioner regardless of how simple the faint may appear.
