SAOIRSE’S IN THE PINK

Never mind the Oscar statuette, our girl won on the red carpet...

COLOUR made a riotous return to the red carpet – as Hollywood stars ditched black at the Oscars. While most adopted the dark dress code in support of the Time’s Up movement at last month’s Baftas, the toast of Tinseltown gathered in a sea of many-hued gowns.

Some stars, however, still chose to wear black pins in support of the campaign against sexual harassment, sparked by a string of allegations against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

Several actresses added a touch of sparkle to proceedings in glittering metallic gowns.

Jennifer Lawrence, who won best actress in 2013, wore a Christian Dior dress festooned in gold

sequins and supported with thin straps.

Lupita Nyong’o shimmered on the red carpet in a gold and black Atelier Versace dress, and even incorporated the metallic theme into her hair.

In a deep red Dior dress, 21-time Oscar nominee Meryl Streep paired her stunning gown with a light pink clutch bag.

Emma Stone, who won the best actress gong last year for La La Land, added a splash of colour in a satin Louis Vuitton blazer tied with a pink sash. Nicole Kidman chose a purple Armani Prive dress, which featured an oversized purple bow around her waist. After wearing black to the Golden Globes and Baftas, Margot Robbie stunned in a white Chanel haute couture gown, with dropped sleeves and an elegant train.

Ashley Judd, one of many stars to accuse Weinstein of abuse, also cast off black in favour of a purple custom Badgley Mischka dress. The actress and activist arrived at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles alongside Mira Sorvino, who also accused the mogul of sexual assault. The pair discussed being ‘phoenixes’ that have emerged from the harassment scandal to light the way for other women.

Miss Judd said: ‘What’s so spectacular about this moment is that finally the world is able to hear.

‘Because I believe that one, our voices have been squelched. And two: those of us who have come forward have often been disbelieved, minimised, shamed and so much of the movement is about externalising that shame and putting it back where it belongs which is with the perpetrator.’

Veteran actor Rita Moreno recycled a 56-year-old dress – the same gown she wore when she won an Oscar for West Side Story in 1962.

The actress first wore the Philippines-made gown when she won the award for best supporting actress.

And with only a few slight alterations, the lampshade dress looked as new as it did over half a century ago. The 86-year-old explained how she decided it was time for her gown from the 1962 awards to make a comeback. She said: ‘This has been hanging in my closet all this time, not even in a bag. What is amazing is this gold thread didn’t tarnish.

changes, good changes, I’m thrilled to be here.’

And although she came away from the ceremony without an Oscar, our own Saoirse Ronan was certainly a winner in the style stakes.

Ronan was nominated for the third time for her role in Gretta Gerwig’s coming-of-age drama Lady Bird. She looked stunning on the red carpet in a blush-pink Calvin Klein dress, complete with huge bow and train detail at the back.

Although she was pipped to the post by Frances McDormand, as the young Meath actress is still only 23, there’s still plenty of time to bag that coveted trophy.
