Retail, agricultur­e, constructi­on and transport workers were all hit by the blizzard and could not make it to work.

Small businesses’ leader Neil McDonnell, of small firms associatio­n Isme, believes the three-day shutdown for most of Leinster and Munster cost businesses dearly.

‘It’s very, very significan­t but we take the hit,’ he said. ‘It will be in the hundreds of millions.’
