GREAT SCOTTISH BACKROWS
FINLAY’S FURIES Derek White Finlay Calder John Jeffrey
The Mount Rushmore of backrows, a granite-faced line-up of unrelenting hardness that formed the best loose trio in Europe for a few years in the late 1980s. All three made the 1989 Lions tour, when Calder captained Ian McGeechan’s men to a famous series win over Australia.
THE KILLER Bs Johnny Beattie John Barclay Kelly Brown
Brown was the enforcer, Barclay the scavenger and Beattie the footballer, and they dovetailed beautifully for a few seasons as the most potent area of Scotland’s team. Their greatest day together came in Scotland’s shock win over Ireland at Croke Park in 2010.
