Pensioner is found dead after another gas tragedy

- By Mollie Cahillane

A MAN in his 70s has died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after a gas leak at a house in Waterford.

The incident happened at Connolly Place on the south side of the city.

Independent Waterford mayor Sean Reinhardt said: ‘I’m just leaving the scene there now. It was a gas leak. Unfortunately there’s a local man dead. This is the second incident in a couple of days. We had a gas explosion before.

‘There was an alarm actually ringing from earlier on in the day. I reckon it was going on too long and that’s how I believe it was discovered. It’s very sad. It’s just a tragic, tragic death.’

The alarm was raised at 8pm and the area has been cordoned off by emergency services.

Fire crews were at the scene last night, and it is understood a number of other houses were evacuated, RTÉ reported.

On Sunday, in a separate incident in the city a man was seriously injured in a gas explosion. He is being treated for burns at University Hospital Waterford.
