BRIDGING SEASONS
How to make your wardrobe work — whatever the weather
WOULDN’T life be so dull if the seasons stayed the same? Granted, it might make getting dressed a bit easier, but really — where’s the fun in that?
The challenge of dressing for changing seasons lies in adapting your wardrobe to suit an unpredictable climate. This is particularly true right now — although the High Street is in full spring mode, we are still shivering in Storm Emma’s wake.
Think of being ‘in-between’ seasons. While the weather is in limbo, so are our wardrobe choices. Let’s call it transitional dressing.
Now, don’t be scared. This is a good thing — it means we get to wear some nice new season pieces, and not freeze to death. So how do we master it? Let’s start with the hero staples — the ‘can’t live without’ pieces to take us snugly into spring.
Firstly, the cover-up. For this time of year, choose the trusty trench coat. It’s a practically perfect transitional piece — classic, tailored, lightweight but still protective, and did I mention versatile? A trench will instantly smarten a jeans and tee combo, or pull together a dress and heels.
Next up is the midi fluted dress. This style of frock is a personal favourite: elegant, chic and super-flattering. Wear floral or with embellishment for a more bohemian look, or streamlined and structured for work.
And let’s not forget the humble knit. This is one of the easiest pieces to wear right now because you can throw it on over anything.
Remember, the trick to getting transitional dressing right is to buy for now — but think ahead. That midi might work with cosy tights today, but will it look just as good with bare legs in a couple of month’s time? Then get ready to layer up again come autumn.
Value per wear and climate appropriate? Transitional dressing, we salute you.
