BRIDGE

- PETER DONOVAN

WHAT action would you take on this hand after partner opens 1NT (12-14) and next hand passes? IF you are playing raw rubber bridge, without any conventions at all – as is the custom in some prominent circles – you will have no difficulty in bidding 2 ♣ (as a weakness take-out).

However, most players do at least play Stayman and, if you’re one of them, beware.

Your 2♣ will be asking partner if he has a major and, if he does all well and good – you can pass with good fortune of a 4-4 fit. But when he has no major, he bids 2♦, and you are in trouble – you must then resort to rebidding 3♣ on this wretched hand.

Your best solution is always to pass in such situations. Partner may have a club fit and be able to set up your long suit, or the opponents may compete and you’ll be off the hook.

If 1NT gets doubled and this gets passed round to you, you can now bid 2♣, which will NOT be Stayman.
