MOTHER OF ALL WINS

- By PHILIP LANIGAN

LIMERICK ambushed All-Ireland and National League champions Galway to clinch promotion back to hurling’s top flight for the first time since 2010. John Kiely’s men went to Pearse Stadium and ended their opponents’ long unbeaten run on a day when the League quarterfinal positions were settled. And the pick of those games sees Davy Fitzgerald’s Wexford now host Galway next weekend, with Tipperary facing Dublin, Kilkenny playing Offaly and Limerick meeting Clare. ‘Fair play to Limerick,’ said Fitzgerald. ‘They’ve been trying a while to get out of Division 1B. Galway will be hurting a small bit so they’ll come down to us all guns blazing.’ Kilkenny’s 0-22 to 0-19 victory over Wexford yesterday saw them finish second to Tipperary in the Division 1A table, though there was an element of shadow-boxing with a rematch to come in the Leinster Championship in June. ‘I was missing eight guys,’ said Fitzgerald. ‘Kilkenny are missing pretty similar. We both know what the story is.’
