PICK OF THE DAY

GROW, COOK, EAT, 7.30PM, RTÉ ONE

THE potato is a great source of nutrition and surely the most versatile vegetable in terms of how it can be cooked. The first episode of this new series, which taps into the burgeoning interest in growing your own food, takes viewers from sowing the seed potato, to harvesting and cooking. Presenter Karen O’Donohoe (pictured with fellow Grow It Yourself advocate Michael Kelly) visits the Mud Island Community Garden in the shadow of Croke Park: just a few years ago it was a derelict site; now it’s a thriving hub where the locals meet to socialise, make friends and, oh, yes, grow fruit and veg. Finally, we meet chef Jessica Murphy, owner of Kai Restaurant in Galway, who prepares a tasty Norwegian potato cake.
