Lilywhites steal points after late, late drama

- By JAMES ROGERS

AN own goal from Garry Comerford in the 94th minute sent Dundalk soaring above Waterford into second place in the table after a dramatic finish at Oriel Park last night. It looked like Stephen Kenny’s side were on course for a fourth 0-0 draw in six matches until the unfortunate Comerford headed Michael Duffy’s cross into his own net deep in added time. On a night where Dundalk goalkeeper Gary Rogers celebrated the 500th league appearance of his career, it looked like his opposite number Lawrence Vigouroux would steal the show as he pulled off a string of fine stops to frustrate the home side. The on-loan Swindon Town keeper made superb stops to deny both Karolis Chevdukas and Dane Massey in the opening half before keeping out a fine Jamie McGrath effort early in the second. Alan Reynolds’ men had their chances too with Derek Daly firing just over in the opening half before Rogers — who has now kept six clean sheets on the bounce — denied substitute John Martin in the second half. Stephen Kenny’s men will take great encouragement from this result especially as they gained ground on reigning champions Cork City who dropped two points at Limerick. DUNDALK: Rogers; Gannon, Cleary, Hoare, Massey; Shields (O’Donnell 84), Chevedukas (Murray 71), McGrath (Tagbajumi 79), Benson, Duffy; Hoban. Scorer: Comerford og 94 WATERFORD FC: Vigouroux; Kavanagh, Browne, Webster, Barnett; Aborah (Keegan 76), Comerford; Daly (Martin 66), Holohan, Puri; O’Halloran.
