I was a bit too Blunt about my President, admits new US citizen Emily

-

IN 2015, she faced a ferocious wave of backlash after she slammed then Presidential hopeful Donald Trump and joked that she ‘regretted’ having become a US citizen.

And in a new interview with ES Magazine, Emily Blunt, pictured, has admitted that she now treads far more carefully with regards to the statements she makes publicly, after she was forced to apologise amid the resulting uproar.

British-born Emily, who became an American citizen in 2015, told the publication of her controversial tongue-in-cheek comments: ‘It was a fairly innocuous joke because, you know, where I’m from we poke fun at our public figures.’

The 35-year-old star, married to US actor John Krasinski, continued, as she shared her reasons for refusing to share her opinions on Brexit: ‘I think I wasn’t quite American enough to be able to say that. [She cringes at the memory.]

‘I have to be really careful now. Certain subjects, I just can’t. Because I’m also someone who loathes getting in trouble. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve loathed getting in trouble.’

The brunette beauty made her comments during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, after watching the now US President take part in a Republican debate, in which he sparred with a moderator over having called women ‘fat slobs’ and ‘pigs’.

She said in reaction: ‘I became an American citizen recently, and that night we watched the Republican debate, and I thought, “This was a terrible mistake. What have I done?”’

That same year, Emily also made an appearance on US chat show Jimmy Kimmel Live, where she shared her mixed reactions on having become an American citizen, as she still remains proudly British.

She said: ‘I’m not sure I’m entirely thrilled about it. People ask me about the whole day. They were like, “Oh, it must have been so emotional.” I was like, “It wasn’t! It was sad!” I like being British.’

During her wide-ranging interview with ES Magazine, Emily also opened up about working with her husband and revealed that she was ‘nervous’ to star opposite him on in their new thriller, A Quiet Place.

The actress plays the lead Evelyn in the thriller, which was also directed by her husband. It follows a family who is forced to live in silence while they hide from creatures that hunt by sound in a post-apocalyptic world.

The mother of two admitted that she feared bringing their two worlds, home and work, together while they tackled the project.

The full interview appears in this week’s issue of ES Magazine which is out today.
