QUESTION

Dear Linda, I have been employed by the same company for 18 years and until recently have looked forward to going to work each day. But my boss recently employed his niece who is inexperienced at the job. She is rude, overbearing and treats the staff — including myself — very badly. She is a bully and the staff fear for their jobs. Our employer is forever singing her praises and no one is speaking up. Should I say something? I am many years her senior, and find her attitude very disrespectful. I no longer enjoy going to work. P.

Dear P It sounds like it’s time to bring the situation out into the open. If your colleagues are prepared to back you up then you should all document incidents of bullying and take them to the boss. Unless someone speaks up, the boss will never know the truth. Bullying in the work place is not uncommon but it should not be tolerated. You are obviously a valued member of staff after 18 years loyal service, and not accepting this unacceptable behaviour can only be valued in an employee. You have nothing to fear by speaking up.
