Over 14,000 carers to be granted free access to GPs

MORE than 14,000 carers are to get free GP care after the Health Minister received Government approval for the drafting of legislation .

Ministers backed Simon Harris’s proposal, which will allow those in receipt of Carer’s Allowance or Carer’s Benefit to see a doctor without fees.

Mr Harris said the move showed the Government recognised the need for further supports for those caring for the most vulnerable in society.

‘I’m very happy to say that when implemented, this measure will enable carers who get the full or halfrate allowance or benefit to qualify automatically,’ he said.

‘I’ve heard first-hand about the pressure that many people are under as they care for their loved ones, and I believe it is important to recognise their commitment and support them.

‘Carers willingly give up a great deal to provide care to family members and others, and I hope this concrete support from the State for their mental and physical wellbeing helps alleviate some of the strain.’

The Government is setting aside €11million for the measure this year, and agreement has been reached with GP bodies, it is understood.

Disabilities Minister Finian McGrath, welcomed the measure. ‘Many thousands of families and other unpaid carers countrywide are providing extensive ongoing care for people with physical or intellectual disabilities, in many cases on a 24/7 basis.

‘They deserve to be supported and recognised and this will make a contribution towards alleviating the significant costs of caring for those who will benefit.’

The measure will benefit approximately 14,000 people who do not currently hold a Medical or GP Visit Card. The change will be implemented this year, subject to the drafting and enactment of the necessary legislation.
