Trucker found dead in Rosslare port after suspected road rage

- By Ali Bracken and Ronan Smyth

AN Eastern European truck driver in his 50s was found dead in his cab in Rosslare port yesterday evening, following a suspected case of road rage.

An Irishman who was arrested a short time later was still being questioned in Wexford Garda station last night.

The dead man’s body was discovered in his lorry at around 6.30pm at the Europort compound. It is understood the arrested man, also in his 50s, had left the scene but was contacted by gardaí a short time later.

Both men are believed to have been driving their trucks towards the port when a road rage incident happened. It is believed the row may have been spurred by an attempt by one of them to overtake the other which led to a fight when the men arrived at the port. There was speculation last night that an assault may not have directly led to the Eastern European man’s death but one could have brought on a heart attack.

Gardaí sealed off Rosslare Europort following the discovery of the dead man’s body.

Deputy Mayor of the Borough District of Wexford Ger Carthy said: ‘As a local county councillor it is certainly a shock that something like that would happen in our locality. It isn’t very common, even in the county of Wexford, and my sympathies and that of the local community go out to this gentleman’s family and friends. It’s a very sad time for them.’

Gardaí said in a statement: ‘An assault is alleged to have occurred between two males at approximately 7pm in the Europort compound. One male in his 50s has been pronounced dead at the scene. A second male, also in his 50s, was arrested a short time later in connection with this investigation and is currently detained.’
