St Peter’s club has also wished him a speedy recovery.

Merseyside Police arrested the 20-year-old and a 29-year-old Italians amid violence scenes ahead of the Champions’ League semi-final.

Another friend on the local authority, Councillor Damien O’Reilly of Fianna Fáil, described Mr Cox as a role model who ‘has done huge work locally’.

Liverpool FC said it was ‘shocked and appalled’ by the incident and urged fans and those who attended the game to help the police.
