MORE CASES REVEALED

-

A SOLICITOR has told how she is bringing cases on behalf of two other ‘distraught’ mothers with cervical cancer, who were wrongly given the all-clear after undergoing smear tests.

Solicitor Jolene McElhinney, of McElhinney & Associates, Co. Donegal, told the Irish Daily Mail the two women’s tests were sent to the same laboratory in Austin, Texas, as Vicky Phelan’s.

She said: ‘I can’t say if they were part of the same batch but certainly we are talking about the same years as the case this week and it is the same laboratory.

‘My clients are both in Donegal, and are extremely private. Both women are in their 40s and have children.’ She added: ‘I do know there are other firms in Donegal which are investigating similar cases. My understanding is that CervicalCheck conducts a review of any cases where a female goes on to develop cancer.

‘Of course, this could mean there are other ladies who have had incorrect smear results and haven’t yet been identified as cancer patients.’

She said: ‘The CervicalCheck had conducted the review of both my clients when they were brought in like Ms Phelan.

‘However, Ms Phelan, wasn’t actually brought in and told, whereas our ladies were brought in and told.’ She said that when their consultants told them what had happened they were devastated.
