DOCTORS are hoping to revive an Irish soccer fan from a coma this week after he was savagely attacked before a Liverpool game. Seán Cox, 53, suffered serious head injuries when he was beaten up outside Anfield before the team he supports played Roma in a Champions League semifinal last Tuesday.

Mr Cox, from Dunboyne, Co. Meath, is in a medically induced coma at Walton Neurological Centre, near Anfield.

Doctors at the specialist hospital are trying to slowly revive him over the next three days.

Meanwhile, his friends and family gathered for a ‘healing Mass’ in Dunboyne last night. Former Meath Gaelic football manager Seán Boylan and ex-RTÉ newsreader John Finnerty were among those who attended.

Many of those present at St. Peter & St Paul’s Church wore

‘It should never have happened’

Meath GAA jerseys as a mark of respect for the injured man.

The parish newsletter said all were welcome to attend, adding: ‘We ask you all to remember in prayer Seán Cox and his family at this difficult time.’

Following last Tuesday’s incident, Filippo Lombardi, 20, was charged with violent disorder and inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Cox. Daniele Sciusco, 29, is charged with violent disorder. Neither of the Attended: Seán Boylan accused entered a plea at Sefton Magistrates Court last Thursday, and the two Italian men will next appear at Liverpool Crown Court on May 24.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said security would have to be reviewed following the incident, adding: ‘That should never have happened... and it should never happen in the future. We all have to do everything to make sure things like that don’t happen anymore.

‘We all are giving all our thoughts and prayers to Seán and his family, of course.’

In a statement, AS Roma said it was co-operating with Liverpool FC, Uefa and the authorities, adding: ‘The club’s thoughts and prayers are with the Liverpool fan in hospital.’

Donations to help pay the Meath man’s medical costs can be made at gofundme.com/ Sean-Cox-Medical-Fund. Within eight hours of being set up, the fund had raised more than €30,000 – and yesterday it topped its €75,000 goal.

One soccer fan on the page said: ‘At times likes this football fans of all teams unite. Thinking of you Seán.’

Another added, ‘Best of luck and prompt recovery from an AS Roma fan from Australia’, wile one said: ‘You’ll get through this Seán! You’ll Never Walk Alone from New Jersey.’
