THE family of Irish Liverpool fan Seán Cox – who was assaulted outside Anfield last month – have said he remains in a critical condition in hospital, but added that they were hopeful he would recover.

Mr Cox, 53, from Dunboyne, Co. Meath, is seriously ill in the Walton neurology centre in Liverpool, despite doctors saying they were hoping to revive him from a medically induced coma last week.

In a statement released yesterday by Liverpool FC on their website, the father of three’s family said he was a fighter and that they had hope in their hearts that he would return home so they could be ‘together as a family once more’.

Mr Cox sustained serious head injuries in an unprovoked assault by Roma supporters outside Anfield before the Champions League semi-final first leg on April 24. The family said: ‘Seán remains in a critical condition, but he is a fighter and that, coupled with the medical and spiritual support he is receiving, gives us hope in our hearts, and we long for the day when our husband, dad and brother returns home to Dunboyne so we can be together as a family once more.’

His wife Martina has flown to England to be by his bedside. The family said they were humbled by the outpouring of support they had received, adding that ‘even in our darkest moments we are not walking alone’.

Donations have flooded in to a gofundme.com page to help pay Mr Cox’s medical bills. It had raised €86,774 by yesterday afternoon.

Two Italian men have been charged over the attack and are due to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on May 24.
