THE sun has most definitely got his hat on – and he’s sticking around.

The country can expect to be bathed in sunshine for the next few days, with the occas i on s hower making an appearance just so we don’t lose the run of ourselves.

The sunny spell will begin today with early mist and fog clearing to sunshine. This afternoon will bring temperatures of 16C to 20C with light northerly breezes, making it feel cooler.

It will be much cooler on the coast with temperatures of 13C or 14C. Tomorrow and Friday will see a good deal of dry weather with warm sunshine, say weather forecasters. However, some showers will break out in the midlands tomorrow afternoon and showers could arrive to parts of the east coast later on Friday.

Sunseekers, though, can look forward to afternoon highs of 16C to 21C as the weekend approaches. The air will feel humidity on Saturday as the mercury creeps upwards to highs of 20C or even 21C. Temperatures, though, will reaching 16C or 17C in parts of the east. Most places will be dry with some sunny spells but these will be matched with some scattered showers.

However, latest forecasts suggest warm and very humid conditions on Sunday and Monday with temperatures in the low to mid-20s in mostly moderate easterly breezes and muggy as the evening approaches.

The heat will be met with downpours in many places as dry but thundery outbreaks are likely to occur throughout the night.

The forecast follows weeks of unpredictable weather that saw a cold snap, marked by chilly mornings and occasional rain, in mid-May. Over the May Bank Holiday weekend, the mercury had soared with temperatures reaching the mid-20s in some of the eastern counties.

A 2018 high was also recorded on the Bank Holiday Sunday with a reading of 23C in Dublin.

But as June approaches, the heat appears to have returned.
