COFFEE THAT SAVES THE PLANET

- MAEVE QUIGLEY

GREAT news if you are a coffee lover who also loves the environment. The damage the huge volumes of plastic we use on a daily basis does to our environment is welldocumented but it can also be incredibly hard to remember that all-important travel mug when rushing out the door in the mornings.

But Irish company Bewley’s is changing how we consume our daily coffee now by making it as easy as possible for their customers to be environmentally friendly on the go with the launch of 100% recyclable and 100% compostable cups.

Bewley’s Grafton Street will lead the way as the first location that will have the 100% recyclable cups on offer and, as Bewley’s work with coffee operators in the Irish market, customers around the country will be able to take their coffee away in one of the new recyclable or compostable cups.

Bewley’s research has shown coffee drinkers are actively looking for ways to use more sustainable prod- ucts with 65% saying they even understand they will be paying a premium as the environmental issue is so important. In response to customers, earlier this year Bewley’s launched their compostable coffee capsules. And now the takeaway cups will be a way to grab that mocha-latte without feeling guilty about the impact your caffeine fix is having on the planet.

Bewley’s recyclable cups have a specially designed liner that breaks down in the recycling process therefore leaving 100% of the paper to be recycled cleanly. The cups and lids will be compatible with regular recycling bins.

The Bewley’s compostable cups are made from sustainable paper sources and include a compostable lid. They are manufactured in Ireland and can be disposed of in the brown bin that is found in most homes and many businesses, and are then fully broken down once taken to the local industrial composting site.
