FIFTY years on, Bullitt is largely known for the lengthy car chase sequence through the streets of San Francisco. But it deserves to be remembered for more than that. Steve McQueen stars as Lieutenant Frank Bullitt, right, a police detective trying to track down the killers of a Mafia turncoat. The cast also features Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Duvall.

INSIDE THE AMERICAN EMBASSY Monday, 10pm - Channel 4

FILMING over a six-month period, the makers of this three-parter had unpreceden­ted access to the US diplomatic mission in London. It is described by Channel 4 as ‘an important landmark observatio­nal documentar­y series which will give viewers a chance to experience a slice of daily life behind the scenes’. The opener introduces ambassador Woody Johnson, a billionair­e businessma­n and pal of Donald Trump.

GENERATION ’66 Thursday, 10pm - BBC4

LOTS of interestin­g things happened in 1966. Perhaps the greatest album in pop, The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds was released. Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, Russia launched the Luna 10 space probe and the Vatican abolished its list of banned books. This hour-long special looks back at ’66 with several contributo­rs of a certain age, including Michael Palin and Janet Street-Porter.

ROMPER STOMPER Friday, 11.35pm - BBC2

THIS six-part series is a sequel to a 1992 film, which launched Russell Crowe. Set among Aussie neo-Nazis, Patriot Blue, the cast includes Jacqueline McKenzie, pictured with Crowe in 1992, and Dan Wyllie, both of whom appeared in the first production.
