Running for president? It would kill me, says Oprah

- Mail Foreign Service

OPRAH Winfrey has ruled out running for US president – ending hopes that she would stand against Donald Trump in 2020.

The talk show host, 64, said she would not enter politics because ‘it would kill me’, adding that the ‘political structure’ was full of ‘non-truths and nastiness’.

Ms Winfrey, who endorsed Barack Obama in the 2008 election, was tipped in January to run against Mr Trump in 2020 after she gave a rousing speech at the Golden Globe Awards in support of those who have exposed or encountered sexual misconduct.

However, in an interview for Vogue, Ms Winfrey said: ‘In that political structure – all the nontruths, the bull **** , the crap, the nastiness, the backhanded backroom stuff that goes on – I feel like I could not exist. I would not be able to do it... it’s not a clean business. It would kill me.’

Speaking to the magazine about the #MeToo and Time’s Up campaign, Ms Winfrey said: ‘People talk about “these are such dark times”, but what if we shift the paradigm? Because I see it differently.

‘I see, “Isn’t this remarkable that we’re waking up?” For years, women have endured craziness. This is what’s happening to people. They’re allowing themselves to not just become corroded, but to become hysterical. You’ve got to lean to the happiness.’

Ms Winfrey has built a media empire that spans magazines, movie and television and radio.

Born into poverty in Mississippi, she is now worth $3.1billion – making her one of the wealthiest women in the world.

Vogue’s August issue is released this Friday.
