Teen in court on Cameron murder charge

- By Ali Bracken Crime Correspondent

AN 18-year-old will appear in court this morning charged with the murder of Louth teenager Cameron Reilly.

The suspect was previously arrested and quizzed over the killing, and was rearrested yesterday.

Gardaí only have the powers to rearrest a suspect when they have sufficient evidence to charge.

The young man was being held last night at Drogheda Garda station and was due to appear before Drogheda District Court at 10am this morning.

The body of 18-year-old Cameron was found in a field in Dunleer, Co. Louth on May 26, the morning after he had been drinking there with teenage friends.

Mr Reilly, who was a student at Dundalk Institute of Technology, had been strangled.

The spot where his body was found by a dog walker is a popular location for young people to congregate. Gardaí believe a group of over 15 teenagers, including Cameron, had gathered there hours before he was killed.

At his month’s mind Mass in St Brigid’s Church, Dunleer on June 24, Fr Michael Murtagh made a fresh appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

He said: ‘One month on we still feel the shock and pain of his death. Our community has been shaken to its foundations by the violence that led to Cameron’s death.

‘We have been forced to focus on the face of evil and have been repelled by it.’

Speaking to the young people of Dunleer, Fr Murtagh added: ‘We are deeply concerned for you all and, like any parent or teacher, we simply want the very best for you. We appreciate the cooperation that has been already given and we encourage you to continue to do your best to support Cameron’s family in whatever way you can.’

Gardaí had previously issued an appeal in a bid to find Cameron’s iPhone 8, which they believe could hold crucial evidence.
