Galway hold off Cats to keep their Leinster title

- ALAN MORRISSEY

GALWAY retained their provincial crown at the second time of asking yesterday seeing off Brian Cody’s spirited Kilkenny in sweltering Thurles.

As Semple Stadium sizzled, it was the All-Ireland champions who were in white-hot form from the throw-in. Micheál Donoghue’s men held a ninepoint advantage — 1-16 to 1-7 — at half-time and, while the Cats clawed their way back into the contest after the break, the Tribesmen never looked uncomfortable.

With Joe Canning leading the line and Jonathan Glynn imperious in the air, Galway held their nerve against a late Kilkenny onslaught.
