Leo: I don’t want car washes using treated water

-

THE Taoiseach has said he would be disappointed if treated drinking water is being used for car washes.

Leo Varadkar added he is ‘very aware’ of such commercial entities using their own water supplies.

Asked if he believed there should be restrictions on car washes during the drought, he said: ‘That depends on the water source. Some water sources aren’t treated drinking water. I wouldn’t like to see people using treated drinking water for commercial car washes.

‘I am very aware that a lot of commercial entities use other water sources. Dublin City Council, for instance, uses canal water for cleaning the streets. That is not water we need to drink in September or October so it depends on the sources. But, certainly, treated water needs to be conserved.’

He added that if the dry and warm weather continues for the next few weeks, there is a risk that we will run into water shortages towards the end of the summer and into the autumn. ‘So my message to the public is to enjoy the warm weather – as everyone is – but also heed the warnings around water conservation, and that involves not using your hosepipe, for instance, to water your garden and wash your car,’ the Taoiseach added.
