SARAH HEALY put the cap on a brilliant weekend for Irish athletics when she landed her second gold medal at the European U18 championships in Hungary yesterday. The young Dubliner set a new a championship record of 4:18.71 to win the 1,500m adding to the 3,000m she had won a couple of days earlier. Healy revealed her plan was to sit in the pack before kicking on after the first lap. ‘Yeah, I decided to take it on — I thought I’d stay out of trouble and speed it up and take the kick out of other people’s legs,’ she said. On Saturday, Rhasidat Adeleke won gold in the girls’ 200m while Sophie O’Sullivan took silver in the 800m and was presented with her medal by her mother, Sonia.

IRISH drivers scored a resounding victory over their British rivals in the annual Formula Vee Festival meeting at Mondello Park yesterday, in aid of the Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice. In the closely fought final, the main race of the day, the home side took the top four places, with Colm Blackburn taking the lead from early pace setter Anthony Cross just before half distance, winning by just one tenth of a second.
