Rhys-Meyers held by police after ‘drunken’ mid-f light row

-

JONATHAN Rhys-Meyers was detained by police at LAX on Sunday night after allegedly getting into a drunken fight with his wife and trying to smoke his ecigarette on an American Airlines flight.

The 40-year-old Irish actor was flying from Miami to Los Angeles with his wife Mara and their one-year-old son Wolf when the mid-flight altercation occurred.

Cork man Meyers, who is a recovering alcoholic and has been to rehab multiple times, allegedly started verbally abusing his actress and producer wife during the profanity-laden argument.

Los Angeles Airport Police told DailyMail.com that they received reports Meyers was causing a ‘disturbance’ on the plane at about 8pm.

It was reported that the star of The Tudors may have been drinking at the time.

The fighting is said to have upset nearby passengers.

At one point during the flight, Meyers allegedly went to the bathroom to try to smoke his e-cigarette but was told by a flight attendant that he couldn’t do so.

Police said Meyers complied with the attendant’s request but continued to be ‘agitated and argumentative’ with his wife when he returned to his seat. The actor was detained on the tarmac when the flight landed so police could speak to witnesses.

Passengers said they were stuck on the plane for more than an hour as a result with multiple police vehicles surrounding the aircraft.

Meyers denied using his ecigarette, which is a federal violation and can result in a fine of up to $4,000. Police said he was ‘admonished’ for his behaviour and then released without charge.

The couple, who have been together since 2013, revealed last year that they had suffered a miscarriage with their second child. Mara said her husband had taken the news particularly hard.

Meyers has been in and out of rehab over the years.
