Clooney hits car windscreen in moped crash

- By Faye White

ACTOR George Clooney was taken to hospital yesterday after he was hit by a car, breaking its windscreen.

The American actor was riding a moped on the Italian island of Sardinia, where he is filming a TV series, when he was struck.

The incident took place as Clooney drove from a rented villa to the northern Sardinian city of Olbia, in an area popular with tourists.

Police said the car involved ‘did not respect the right of way’, causing the collision.

Reports said Clooney was wearing a helmet and was not driving fast.

The 57-year-old was treated by the road before being taken to hospital. A scan found he had trauma to the pelvis and knee, but no fractures.

He left the hospital with his wife Amal, 40, a human rights lawyer, two hours later. He was told that it would take 20 days to recover.

Pictures of the scene showed his moped lying on its side in the road.

A blue Mercedes had its front licence plate knocked off and its windscreen smashed in the crash.

Witnesses said Clooney’s head hit the windshield.

A Police spokesman said: ‘At 8.15am George Clooney was riding his scooter on the State Road 125 towards Olbia from Puntaldia. A car ... did not respect the right of way and hit him. George Clooney fell and slammed the windshield of the Mercedes.’

A representative for Clooney said: ‘He is recovering at his home and will be fine.’

The actor will play US Air Force commander Scheisskopf in the Channel 4 adaptation of the Joseph Heller novel, Catch-22.

Clooney, his wife and their one-year-old twins Ella and Alexander are based on the Italian island during filming.
