Why No.13 can prove very lucky for house hunters...

- By Christian McCashin

HOUSE hunters can purchase a home numbered 13 cheaper than another property in the neighbourhood, a survey has revealed.

Friday the 13th may be considered by superstition to be one of the unluckiest days of the year but the number could save house hunters money.

The value of homes at No.13 are typically €4,700 cheaper than the average property, according to analysis carried out by Daft.ie of almost a million homes sold since 2016.

However, nearly one in ten of us (9%) would try to avoid buying or moving into a property at No.13.

Also, if you are thinking of making an offer on that house you’ve been looking at, today – Friday the 13th – is the day to do it. Today’s date is considered by many to be one of the unluckiest days of the year. But the research shows there’ll be fewer hopeful house hunters making offers.

There also just over 13% less sales on a Friday the 13th than any other Friday, analysis by the property website shows. Trinity College Dublin economist Ronan Lyons, author of the Daft.ie research, said: ‘We can see clear evidence of superstition at work in the housing market.

‘This is true both for prices, with properties numbered 13 cheaper than the average, and quantities, with fewer transactions on a Friday the 13th than on other Fridays.’
