Baby boom! Tens of thousands gather to protest against visit

-

TENS of thousands of demonstrators gathered in the centre of London yesterday to protest the visit of Donald Trump to Britain.

Protesters railed against the visit, brandishing placards with slogans highlighting some of the US president’s controversial policies and his attitude towards race and climate change.

The demonstrators were accompanied by an inflatable effigy of the US leader wearing a nappy, which was dubbed ‘Trump baby’ by protesters.

The protest kicked off with the Women’s March on London which, began at the BBC with thousands of women carrying banners highlighting Mr Trump’s attitude towards women.

There was a festival-like atmosphere with music and speakers taking to a platform to address those assembled in Trafalgar Square.

Demonstrators were joined by British Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and his party colleague Ed Miliband, with Mr Corbyn addressing the crowd, calling for unity and freedom of speech. Organisers of the Together Against Trump demonstration claimed more than 100,000 people had joined the march by the early afternoon.

Elsewhere, people took to the streets of Manchester, Glasgow and Belfast, echoing the displeasure of demonstrators in London. At a press conference on Thursday, Mr Trump said he believed he was popular with the people of the UK.
