Teen arrested over stabbing of popular fisherman

- By Neil Michael Southern Correspondent

A POPULAR fisherman stabbed early yesterday morning is believed to have been killed during a row about a car.

Waterford man Jack Power is said to have confronted a teenager he had been told had damaged his car while he had been out fishing.

During the row that followed, a youth went into a nearby house and is alleged to have returned with a knife. Another youth is alleged to have confronted 25-year-old Mr Power with an iron bar.

Nearby residents on the Shanakiel estate in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford, heard shouting and screaming and called the emergency services and gardaí at around 3.40am.

One neighbour found Mr Power lying in a pool of blood outside a house and tried to administer CPR until emergency services arrived.

Sadly, Mr Power, a local fisherman on his father Richard’s trawler, The Girl Geraldine, later died from his injuries, University Hospital Waterford, after being treated for a single stab wound. His father was at sea at the time. Waterford City councillor Pat Fitzgerald told the Irish Daily Mail last night: ‘Jack was a lovely lad, a good, decent, hard-working guy. ‘He comes from a good and well-respected family. I think he may have known the teenager who has been arrested and may have even been to the same school as him.

‘This is just such a very unfortunate incident and I want to express my condolences to the family.’

Gardaí said: ‘A man in his teens, 17, has been arrested and is detained at Waterford Garda station.’
