IRELAND’S GREAT WALKING ESCAPES

-

HIT THE TRAILS IN CO. LAOIS

LAOIS has a large selection of walks to enjoy, including those that criss-cross the Slieve Bloom Mountains, but the Dunmore Loop at Durrow is one that’s accessible to all. The five kilometre loop is largely flat and features both woodlands and open fields. The great River Nore runs nearby and you will also traverse the smaller watercourse, Erkina. The woods form part of what was once Dunmore Demesne.

Durrow is well known for its castle, which dates back to 1715. Now an elegant hotel, it offers both formal and casual dining. Durrow Castle was built by the Flower family, the Viscounts Ashbrook, who were also responsible for the appearance of the adjoining quaint village where many of the original Georgian and Victorian buildings still line the streets.

DELGANY, Co. Wicklow, is considered by many to be one of the most picturesque villages in Ireland’s Ancient East. The Delgany Heritage Trail takes you from the village through some magnificent scenery and past historic landmarks. Look out for Christ Church, the evocative-sounding Three Trout Stream and the old Carmelite monastery.

Powerscourt House nearby is a must if you are in the area. Its gardens and rolling estate are justly famous and there’s a stunning waterfall on the grounds that you’ll want to photograph.

If you’re hungry, you’re spoilt for choice thanks to the Avoca cafe and store which pulls in the crowds: there’s hearty fare and a sinful selection of cakes and desserts, too. Why not get food to take away so you can enjoy a picnic in the Garden of Ireland?
