FAMILY BREAKS ON THE WILD ATLANTIC WAY

-

CYCLE THE ORIGINAL GREENWAY

There are exciting new plans to develop several greenways throughout the country — and the Great Western Greenway is the one that kicked off the phenomenon.

The 42km route between Achill Sound and Westport runs along what was once the rail service and takes in some of the most jaw-dropping natural beauty you could hope for. You will want to get off your bike constantly to take photos, especially when you catch sight of Clew Bay and its numerous islands.

There are several places you’ll want to stop off, but make sure to make time for Burrishoole Abbey, near the village of Newport. This well-preserved ruin was founded by Sir Richard de Burgo in 1469.

All that cycling is bound to work up an appetite and Nevin’s in Tiernaur is the perfect place for hearty, homemade food.

INVESTIGATE OUR ANIMAL LIFE

There’s an incredible diversity of animal life along the Atlantic shoreline and the Sea Synergy and Activity Centre at Waterville, Co Kerry, is the perfect destination for nature lovers. There are shore rambles with expert guides, snorkelling courses and even a guided beach walk at night.

Waterville is an ideal location from which to explore the Iveragh Peninsula. Drive a 20-minute stretch of the Ring of Kerry as far as Derrynane to bring the family to one of the Kingdom’s great beaches. It’s also the home of Derrynane House — the fine country pile where Daniel O’Connell was born. Its gardens are well worth exploration.

Head to the Coomanaspic Pass on the western side of the peninsula for mesmerising views, including those of the Skelligs, now known around the world thanks to their starring role in the last couple of Star Wars movies.

EXPLORE A BRILLIANT BEACH

Family fun is synonymous with sea and sand and there is an abundance of glorious Atlantic beaches to make your own, including Ballymastocker in Donegal. Once named as the second-best beach in the world, this stunning sandy strand is a firm family favourite. Located on the western side of Lough Swilly between Rathmullan and Fanad Head, it’s both accessible and secluded. Take a stroll here and drink in the mesmerising view towards the Inishowen Peninsula. The nearby Fanad Head Lighthouse is one of the country’s great nautical beacons. It’s located in an area of stunning natural beauty and you’ll really feel close to nature here: whales, porpoises and dolphins are plentiful in the Atlantic at this northerly point. There’s an impressive visitor centre which brings this part of the county to life for young and old alike.
