FAMILY BREAKS IN DUBLIN

-

PICNIC IN THE PARK

They’ve picnicked in the Phoenix Park ever since the good Lord Chesterfield opened it to the public in 1745. There’s an abundance of choice when it comes to a spot to enjoy your picnic — how about the benches off Military Road? You can enjoy a fine view of Dublin city centre from there. And there are dedicated picnic benches in several parts, including the Furze Road.

There’s so much for families to do in the park, including a stop-off at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre and its adjoining playground. The park is also full of wildlife, including a large herd of fallow deer roaming free. Dublin Zoo, in the grounds of the park, is as alluring as ever and the recent birth of three adorably cute California sea lion pups will make it even more irresistible!

GET A BIRD’S-EYE VIEW

Croke Park, as every GAA fan knows, is the spiritual home of hurling and Gaelic football — and the fourth-largest stadium in Europe. But it’s not just on match day that it comes into its own — this is a fascinating place for all the family to visit all year round. The GAA Museum — which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year — offers far more than just a history of these great games.

It’s very much a hands-on experience and there’s a new augmented reality app to bring the thrills of playing to everyone. The Ericsson Skyline Tour is ideal for those with a head for heights. It allows you to travel 17 storeys high and walk above the roof of the Cusack Stand. You’ll get amazing views of both the pitch and the city.

TAKE A BOAT OUT TO THE BAY

Dublin’s horseshoe-shaped bay has played a pivotal part in the shaping of our capital for more than 1,000 years and the very best way to get to know it is by hopping aboard a pleasure boat for a few hours.

Dublin Bay Cruises offer several services, including a very popular Dún Laoghaire to Howth cruise.

They are also offering biodiversity cruises which demonstrate the way nature and people connect in the bay.

No matter where you alight — whether it’s the city centre, Howth or Dun Laoghaire — you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to great food for all the family. If you’re a seafood lover, Howth is the place to go — take a walk on the pier and choose between a dozen or so fantastic restaurants.
